Scott and Lori Walker: 30th Wedding Anniversary

Today marks 30 years since my young-and-in-love parents were married in the Salt Lake LDS temple.
December 19, 1985.
Just a regular day for millions of people - but a day that changed my parents lives and a day that set into motion my life as I know it. Marriage is a wonderful thing. To make commitments to another person in such a fickle world. To set up the foundation for a family, for gospel learning, for success in this life and in the next.

I've been thinking a lot about my parents and the blessing that their marriage has been in my life. My parents were going to go on a cruise this year to celebrate, (30 years is kind of a big deal!) but they ended up canceling it for several reasons; one reason being that my Dad's siblings decided to throw my Grandpa Walker a big 80th birthday party on the 19th. Then my little brother Matthew proposed to his fiance Brooklyn and my siblings and I started worrying that their anniversary was going to get entirely forgotten. So we decided to throw them an anniversary party and it turned out better than I could have even hoped. We told them that we wanted to have a birthday party/our monthly family dinner on December 13th. (Matthew, Melissa, and Brooklyn all have December birthdays.) So we invited them down to our home. Jenna came early in the morning to help get dinner started and finish making the (amazing) cake. Mom and Dad showed up a while before we were going to start, and we just chatted and made sure that all of our surprise things were hidden away. Then right before dinner started, we started pulling out the china and fancy things - saying that we thought it would be fun to have a fancy Christmas dinner instead of our regular casual style.

It wasn't until right before we sat down to eat that we pulled out the cake, centerpieces, 30 year timeline, and picture frames. They were so surprised! I gave a little speech and we enjoyed a delicious dinner celebrating their marriage and life together. After dinner, each child gave a toast and we clinked glasses filled with sparkling cider and it was festive and fancy and perfect. Oh, and we ended with a "pearl" decorated cake (the 30th anniversary is the pearl anniversary) that we made them cut together. More than anything I just hope that these two wonderful people know how much they mean to our family. Their life and example is an incredible blessing to all of us.

I love them.

This is the "speech" I read before dinner. I'm just keeping it here for journaling purposes.

Mom and Dad,
Surprise! We know the next couple of weeks are going to be incredibly busy but we didn’t want to let your 30th anniversary pass by without recognizing it and the wonderful accomplishment that it is. The two of you mean so much to our family. Today we celebrate who you are and what you’ve become together.

We thought it would be fun to take a look back over the last 30 years:

Scott and Lori met while attending Rick’s College in Rexburg, ID. They started dating and Lori even took a job at the Little America in Wyoming between semesters so they could be together. When Scott proposed to Lori on a bench in front of the Salt Lake Temple, she thought he was joking and pushed him over telling him not to tease her like that. When she saw his stunned face she realized he was serious and, of course, she said yes.

They started out their life together on December 19th, 1985 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They moved to Provo, UT where they both attended BYU. During these happy years they welcomed two loving daughters into their family, Shantel Elise in 1987 and Jenna Anne in 1990. Lori graduated with her Bachelors Degree in Special Education and worked at a small school near their home.

Although he hadn’t graduated with his Masters Degree yet, Scott arranged to complete his Thesis project while gaining real-work experience. In 1992 they accepted a job at the DWR Research Station in Ephraim, UT. They moved their little family and soon welcomed twins into the crew. Matthew Scott and Melissa Shaye were born in December 1992.

In 1993 Melissa got very sick with RSV and was life-flighted to Primary Childrens hospital. During her stay at the hospital, Scott had to be at BYU to defend his Thesis. He slept in his lab on campus; while Lori stayed by Melissa’s side. It was a difficult time, but together they made it through. Scott graduated with his Masters Degree from BYU and the family was soon reunited at home.

Scott and Lori spent the next 12 years growing their family and growing together in their little town of Ephraim. Scott enjoyed his job as a Wildlife Biologist and his kids loved visiting his seed warehouses and the relocated deer the division took care of. Lori devoted all of her energy to raising her, now five children, (as Jacob Colvin joined the family in 1995.) She also found time to run a daycare from her home, perform respite care, work at the local school, work as a librarian at the Ephraim Library, and then be a receptionist at a local car dealership. (How she survived this busy time in her life, we will never know.)

In early 2005, the family relocated to Morgan, UT so that Scott could take a job as the Habitat Manager of the Northern Region of the State of Utah. Lori started working as a resource teacher at Morgan Elementary.

Through the next ten years, all five of their children graduated from Morgan High School. Both sons, Matthew and Jacob took the opportunity to serve missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. One by one their daughters attended college, found their own sweethearts, and were sealed in the temple: Shantel & David in 2009, Jenna & Kevin in 2011, and Melissa and Blake in 2014. Matthew & Brooklyn will join the ranks of the married children in just 9 short days. Jacob will return home from his mission in July of 2016.

There have been ups and downs trials and blessings. Family vacations,  Pumpkin Carving Extravaganzas, Christmas celebrations, days spend out on the lake, and days spent working together. Through it all, our parents have been wonderful examples of Christlike love and service to their family. I speak for all of us at this table when I say that we have been blessed by your marriage, your examples, and your lives. Simone Signoret said “Chains do not hold a marriage together. It is theads, hundreds of tiny threads which sew people together through the years. “ The two of you have tied together many strands of family and friendship through your love for us and for each other. We thank you for your example and celebrate your anniversary for the gift that it is to us.

Life could have taken you anywhere, but it brought you to each other. Right where you were meant to be.

We love you.

Also, I found a few pictures of their lives over the last 30 years. I kind of love every single one of them! It's amazing to see how they've changed and grown together. It makes me feel supported in my own life - to know that once they were raising a small family like I am. They are wonderful parents and examples and I hope that someday my family will be as wonderful as theirs.

Love you Mom and Dad!

A messy brain.

My brain is messy sometimes. It will jump from task to task, from thought to memory, from one thing to another about a million times a minute. Sometimes as I try to plan out what I'm going to do for the hour/day/week I'll start filling in tasks into slots and then everything just transitions into static and I can't focus my brain to make it work the way I want it to. Then I get overwhelmed and wonder how in the world I'm going to do everything that I need to do. My brain. It just gets messy in there sometimes.

That's why I use a paper planner. I can't get behind a planner on my phone. I just like to be able to see everything laid out on paper and be able to flip from thing to thing. Also, I like to scratch things off my list when I'm done. (I'll even write something that I've already done, just so I can scribble it out and feel good about what I was able to accomplish.

This month is going to be incredibly busy. Christmas of course, with all of the corresponding Christmas Parties and present purchasing (and cookie baking). My little brother's wedding. My little sister's baby being born. My grandpa's 80th birthday party. My parent's 30th wedding anniversary. Getting our primary ready for 2016. Absolutely all of these things are wonderful - and individually I look at my to-do-lists for each thing and think it's totally manageable. And then I remember that I have to do all of the things for these things all at the same time and I think I'm probably crazy!

But this is the thing that I've been thinking about this morning. Messy might be a way of life for us right now - messy house, messy car, messy brain - but messy isn't always bad. Because throughout it all, we are together. We are making memories. We are celebrating wonderful events and people. I might have to let go of some of the things I want to do, but can't. I might not even get all of the things done that I'm supposed to do. But we are going to do our very best.

I've said I'm going to make blogging a priority, and so on this day when I'm drowning in things I'm supposed to be doing - I took a half an hour and blogged this random bit from my messy brain. (Yes, it took me a half an hour to even organize my thoughts enough to form a coherent-ish post.)

Today I'm going to embrace the messy and instead of stressing about the next thing on my list as I'm working on something I'm going to just try to do my best in the moment (while still getting through my to-do list).

Ummm... The end.

Insta-Tuesday {12.8.15}

The camera on my phone is terrible. Like absolutely awful. We've gone through some dumb phone-drama lately (and by we, I mean I) and I just got my lame-phone-with-a-bad-camera replaced by another lame-phone-with-a-bad-camera because the sensor on the first phone stopped working and wouldn't let me open my phone because it thought something was covering it AND it kept hanging up on people because it thought my cheek was trying to push the end-call button. I digress. I just look at these pictures and love the memories associated with them while simultaniously wishing that the picture quality was better. I always feel dumb posting such awful pictures to instagram (and would totally stop if I wasn't doing it so I could post them to our blog then print them in our blog book). I just can't fathom how pictures from my childhood 20 years ago are better quality than the pictures I can capture. *sigh* I know it doesn't really matter, and I really am grateful for the phone that I have and that it only cost $30. AND I know that I'm not responsible enough for a $700 iPhone. But, I can't help but wish that my photos were just a little better quality.

But that's not really what this post is about. This post is about winter and all the wonderful things we've been up to. Enjoy!

{11.10.15}
Snow! We tromped around outside this morning (like before-breakfast early) and by the time I let her go back out this afternoon much of it had melted... but she loved it all anyway. (Except she wanted me to make it not so cold.) He loved watching it out the window with his little friend and was mad I wouldn't let him go out, too. #firstsnow #idontreallylikesnow#orcold #orwinter#butidolovechristmasandreadingbooksunderblanketssoiwillsurvive#ohandnetflixbingewatching#anysuggestions?

{11.12.15}
Another wonderful day at the Ranch. Grandpa Walker (my dad) was there helping Grandpa-great work the cows and afterwards took L & C out to the tire swing, then with him to grain the bulls, look at the horses, and a myriad of other fun things. I spent a nice day with my Grandmother and my sister. I love it there and I especially love when my kids get to experience life on the Ranch. (And when my dad is there because he's pretty much the best.)#wyominglife #familiesareforever#whichiswhytheyareimportantrightnow

{11.19.15}
We went to the "donut factory" this afternoon and both kids were enthralled with the whole process. The highlight being when the guy making the donuts gave Lydia and Austin each one of their very own donuts hot off the line. The whole stop was an afterthought after I had already dragged them around to four different stores but I felt like the best mom in the world. Hopefully it makes up for some of my less than stellar mom moments lately. #thatshowitworksright #krispykreme#donutfactory

{11.22.15}
Austin has been really clingy lately and only wants his mama. But tonight during our bedtime routine David was laying on Lydia's bed and Austin climbed right in and curled himself up next to his Daddy's chest. It was so sweet. The talks in church were about being grateful in all things and I'm just filed with so much gratitude for this little family of mine, especially the wonderful husband who manages to make me feel like he is the lucky one even though everyone knows it's the other way around. I can't imagine a better partner or better dad for L&A. I guess I'm feeling a little sappy (I'm really tired) but this picture makes my heart want to burst. It was one of those moments that I'm SO glad to have captured. This little boy loves his Dad. #abadcameraisbetterthannocamera#heartfullofgratitude

{11.23.15}
It's my amazing mother's birthday today. There are no words for how much I love this woman. She's taught me so much throughout my life and continues to teach me how to be a good mother every day. When I need advice or comfort, she's always there. I'm so blessed to have her.@lwalker23

{11.25.15}

{11.25.15}
Spent the day at the Ranch visiting Grandma- and Grandpa-Great. Bonus: Grandpa Walker came with us and took Lydia out with them all day long. It was a lovely day. (I told her to try to give GG a kiss before he tickled her, and snapped that top picture. I love it!)#walkerangusranch #wyomingdays

{11.26.15}
I can't find the words to express all the feelings in my grateful heart today. There are so many blessings, great and small, that fill my life every day. I'm grateful for the opportunity to live in this scary and troubled world with a knowledge of God and the solid foundation of the Gospel and I'm grateful for my sweet family who give me perspective and purpose and fill my life with so much happiness. (Also, Lydia let me curl her hair today and I think that is a Thanksgiving miracle!) Happy Thanksgiving!

Bow ties are cool.#whovianintraining

{11.30.15}
Free aquarium day today. Not nearly as crazy as free zoo day but still a lot of people. Lydia loved climbing in the jungle gym area but Austin looooved the exhibits. I'm just glad to have spent some time with my sister @jennahaderlie. These cousins make me smile. (Truth be told: Lydia didn't listen to me the whole time which resulted in a lot of power struggles and stress. But I'm hoping this still makes it into the "good childhood memory" bucket.)#lovelandlivingaquarium#cousinsmakethebestfriends

{12.2.15}
Holiday Lights at Thanksgiving Point last night. Highlights: Austin giggling as he helped "drive" and Lydia pointing out all the things she saw in the lights. I'm sad they aren't doing this next year!#christmastraditions

{12.7.15}
Our wonderful (and Jewish) neighbors held a Hanukkah party tonight. It was so fun and interesting and I hope they do it every single year!

{12.8.15}
Holiday baking round one: sugar cookies. Two double batches will hopefully be enough to least the season. (Plus enough for the annual cookie decorating contest.)#peadenfamilytraditions#onlyonethirddonewithourbaking
