Lydia 1st Grade Indoor Soccer

Lydia did indoor soccer in March and loved it. It was fun for us to be there. Here the highlights/things I'll remember from her first real team sport.

-She has the cutest run/hop in the world. She would run around and then every little bit she would add in a hop that made her look like she could not be happier.
-She was not afraid to get in there and go after the ball. She was not the best at kicking it, but I was proud because she was not afraid to move in and try to get the ball.
-Every time her team scored she had the biggest look of triumph and loved celebrating. She did not care if she scored, she just loved when her team scored.
-She was always so kind. There were multiple times that someone would fall or the ball would hit their face and Lydia would stop and check on them to make sure they were okay.
-Lydia would always find us in the stands and wave to us multiple times a game. When she got to the sideline after a substitution she would look over and check on us and wave to us (and her brothers). Even when she was in the game she would often look over, give us a huge smile and wave and then go back to playing.
-She is such a rule follower. Right from the first day if her coaches told her to stand in a line, she would stand in the line and not move. Or if she thought she was supposed to kick it a specific way, she would do that.

Her Highlights:
She loved getting after game snacks
She loved just running around
Her soccer jersey and shinguards
Her soccer medal. After the last game she got her medal and was so excited and proud of it. We had to run to the store after the game and she was excited to wear her medal into the store (with her soccer jersey) so everyone could see she is a champion soccer player.

There were 8 games and we had so much fun. They would practice for about 20 minutes before the game and then let the kids play. I loved it and so did Shantel and the boys. Here are some of my favorite pictures.

Homeschool Adventures

I wanted to do a unit study about Utah to follow along with the Utah State standards for 1st grade and had been brainstorming how I wanted to do it for quite a while. I knew I wanted to have the unit revolve around a map of Utah but I wasn't sure how to fit everything together. When I had the thought to make a giant map of Utah to hang on our wall and use throughout several Unit studies I got so excited and it has been working so well for us! So far we have learned about the location of Utah on a map (on the world and in the United States), the symbols and landmarks of Utah, Utah Temples, Promontory Point (and the Transcontinental Railroad), and most recently the different habitats in Utah (Simplified into Wetlands, Forests, and Deserts). After learning about the three different habitats, I let Lydia (and Austin) pick an animal to research. They each thought of three questions that they wanted to know about their chosen animal and then together we found the answers. It was so fun and interesting and... I just love homeschool.

We've been building a lot.

If I had to choose one thing that was my very very favorite thing about homeschooling my kids it might be our slow mornings in my bed. The kids wake up about seven and come crawl into bed with me until about seven-thirty. Sometimes we sleep, sometimes we just snuggle. Oftentimes after I'm ready to really wake up, we read books together until we get hungry enough to force us to stop and go downstairs for breakfast. Our routine has slowly been pushed back later and later to make space for this unhurried portion of our morning but you know what? I'm just fine with that. I will treasure these slow, snuggly mornings for as long as I can have them.

We hold our Poetry Treat Time (aka Poetry Tea Time for other homeschoolers) every Thursday afternoon. This includes making a special treat to eat, setting out our special teacups and china plates and eating our snack while I read the kids bits of poems and fairy tales. They love it. In truth, Austin loves it most of all. He really enjoys it. He loves helping to make the treat, helping to pour the juice, and eating the snack while listening to a story. This is another special activity that I love about homeschool - with all sorts of benefits and connections that come from the process.

We've been hitting up the Afterschool Art class at the library on Mondays. I want to incorporate more art into our homeschool and this has been a fun and easy way to get one more bit of exposure.

Reading. My kids have always liked me to read to them. Right now Austin's favorite books for me to read are beginning chapter books called Dragon Masters. I still want to read him picture books, but he begs me to read those instead. For now, I've decided that it's just fine and I am just so happy that he loves to have me read to him. Lydia has taken off in the reading department over the past several months. I can hardly keep up with her! It's been amazing to watch her develop a true love of reading with the skills to back it up. David and I both love to read and so do our parents and so did many of our grandparents - so she comes from a long line of readers, but it's neat to watch her develop the love for herself.

I love our homeschooling life. It's not always perfect but it certainly has more good days than bad days. My kids are thriving and so am I. These are just a few tiny snippets of our homeschool adventures - most of the time we are too focused on what we are doing to take any pictures at all (which is how I want it). I want my kids to be engaged in what they are doing without worrying about capturing the moments in order to post about them later - so I try to live by that myself. There are so many things that I'll never record and so they will be lost with the passage of time. But I like the analogy that my Dad often uses about building a wall or a building out of bricks. You might not remember each and every brick, but each hour- each day- you are laying bricks that will eventually turn into something bigger and more beautiful than you can imagine.

Dear Austin,

Dear Austin,
I had a Primary Presidency meeting tonight at 8:00 downstairs in our living room. I got you in bed by seven and came in and checked on you several times before my meeting. Finally, as my meeting got closer, I told you that I really needed you to go to sleep and that wouldn't be able to come up to check on you until after my meeting. I didn't hear another peep from you, but when I was finished with my meeting and headed back upstairs to check on you I found you fast asleep at the top of the stairs - just waiting for me.

My sweet boy. I can just imagine you not being able to fall asleep and coming out of your room and stopping by the gate because you knew that you weren't supposed to come downstairs during my meeting. I imagine you laying down and listening to the sound of my voice, thinking that you'd just wait there until I came back upstairs.

My heart simultaneously burst with love for you and also broke because of how much I wish I could give you as your mother and how often I fail at that. I make mistakes all the time. You mean so much to me and you are far more important than any meeting. Although, I am grateful that you did stay upstairs because I did have a meeting- and serving in my calling is important to me, too. It's such a hard balance.

I scooped you up and carried you back to your bed, kissing your forehead, whispering how much I love you, and tucking you in before I left. I hope that you remember the love, the book reading in bed, the kisses, and the attention focused just on you. I hope you know that I'm doing my best. You are special to me. You have a tender heart and I am so lucky to be your mom.

Love, Mama.

insta-march

insta-march

{3.1.19}
Wiped off our February Calendar today and it looked so clean and fresh that I couldn't bring myself to put up our March calendar yet. I've been loving our January/February and I'm not sure I'm ready for our busy March. But warmer days are coming and that brings a special joy to my heart. The only thing that made it on the calendar is Caleb's birthday, compliments of Lydia. We are SO excited for that.
{3.2.19}
Both of my boys fell asleep within 3 blocks of home. I drove an extra time around to block to make sure Austin was really asleep. Now I'm parked in front of my house and wishing I had my book to read! But naptime is SO needed today and I thought it was going to get skipped so I'll take what I can get. Maybe I'll recline my seat back and take a nap myself. 😴😴😴

{3.2.19}

24.5 weeks! I've been taking weekly pictures since 13ish weeks but realized I haven't posted any yet. So, here's a quick Baby #4 update: I'm feeling SO much better than I was. Seriously, the second trimester and I are great friends. For a couple of weeks I was hungry ALL the time and was basically inhaling all food, especially baked goods. But lately I haven't been in the mood for anything. I can't even choke down most meat (except lunch meat, which you aren't supposed to eat cold, as per my pregnancy usual), even the thought of meat is so unappealing. Canned pineapple has been my go to snack and that's been great. We have started talking about names for this little girl, and she will probably end up with one of the two names that we keep going back and forth on (David with one name and me with another) or she probably won't have a name. Ha. I mean, there might be another name out there, but I don't know what it is, and I don't know where to find it. Baby center, baby name apps, family search, etc.. none of it is producing anything to sway us from our two initial thoughts. Unfortunately we just don't agree on which one would be best!#babynamesarehard But, I'm grateful for this little sister who already has such a big piece of my heart. ♥️♥️♥️

{3.4.19}
This was a fun, low-key, last minute date with @davidpeadenfrom last weekend. We dropped the kids off at a neighbor's and went to the @tinyartshow in Provo. Cleverly named tiny artwork, tiny art program, and tiny little heart confetti? Yes please. I love things like this. (Plus, I didn't have to make dinner 👏👏👏!)

{3.10.19}
Happiest birthday to this guy right here. 🥳🎂🎁🎉 I would say that I can't believe he's turning two, except that it absolutely feels like he should be two. (It's weirder to think that he's only been with our family for two years than that he's having his second birthday.) My favorite things that he says are: funny (when he's amused), Mom-ee, help? (When he needs my help with something), Help! (When he absolutely doesn't want any more help because he can manage just fine on his own, thank you very much.), Train ride, fun. (In reference to our frontrunner adventure which he hated at the time and now loves to talk about. And, watch this! (Right before he does something that he thinks is SO neat, like spinning in a circle.) He is very particular about his bedtime routine, but fairly easy going about most other things. We love him the most.

{3.10.19}
Birthday Celebrations Part I. Caleb acted the part of a tired two year old (#thankyoudaylightsavings) and threw a tantrum when we tried to start his party - but after eating several servings of waffles and fruit (his favorite) he was ready. A tractor/digger cake, presents, and lots of ice cream? I'd say he's going to bed as a pretty happy two year old.

{3.21.19}
Happy second birthday to our favorite puppy, Riley. 🐕♥️ Thanks @_amyperkins for letting us borrow your pup for the afternoon and for making all of Lydia's dreams come true. #shewantsadogsomuch
{3.23.19}
This picture from back in August seemed a fitting picture for today. We had a giant kid-meltdown before bedtime last night, then grumpy kids all morning (on the 6,578th Saturday of busy season, meaning David was gone at work). I tried to get ready and after 12.5 minutes of wearing jeans I realized that they were making ME even grumpier than my kids and I changed back into sweats. (😂) The day was mostly salvaged after David got home from work, but man... I'm just tired. #27weekspregnant #busyseason

{3.23.19}
20 weeks - 24 weeks - 27 weeks. Baby Update: Other than being extra tired this week, I've been feeling really good. The second trimester was good to me, but I feel like the third trimester exhaustion started a few days early. I only wear sweatpants. I eat chocolate chips by the handful. (Caleb knows that, so whenever he sees me eating something he says "I want some' dat.") I feel baby girl move the most in the morning and right before bed (maybe because that's when I slow down?). I got to snuggle my sweet friend @_amyperkins's newborn and it made me even more excited to have our own little miss join us.

{3.27.19}
Indoor soccer for the win. ❤️+⚽

{3.28.19}
I found this sweet boy sleeping at the top of the stairs after a meeting I had last night. 😭😍 These kids are so good to stay in their beds when I really need them to (mostly when I have primary meetings downstairs and David is still at work). I can just imagine him wanting to come downstairs but just laying by the gate to wait for my meeting to be over and falling asleep. Oh, my mama-heart.❤️💔 Also, I did my glucose test yesterday and it made me feel yucky all day but I had a friend volunteer to bring me dinner. I was so grateful and still am grateful for good people. Good people and good kids and just so many blessings.
{3.28.19}
My mom is such a safe and loving space for my children. I love her. She did homeschool with Lydia today while I stayed downstairs and took care of kids and cousins. It was a special day for my Lydia girl, who wrote in her journal "Grandma is helping me do my school today. I love when she comes to our house." Also, my mom knows she can only pack enough stuff to stay for a certain amount of days, because otherwise I'd keep her here with me forever.

Austin 4.5 Years

Hitting the six month mark between birthdays is the perfect chance to sit and try to write down some of the special things about Austin right now. He's kind, funny, super opinionated, and just the best brother there could be.

Stats: Mostly moved into all 4T things. He seems to have hit a height growth spurt and has grown out of all the 3T pants that he was wearing. Most of them we have to use drawstrings with because they are too big around his waist, but he's definitely growing into them.

I interviewed him about some of the things that he likes right now:

Interview:
Favorite Color - Blue
Favorite Food - Special Wraps (Chicken Cordon Bleu wraps)
When you grow up: A machine maker. (He used to say a builder, but it's recently turned into "machine maker".
Favorite thing to do: play with Daddy - chase the monster.
Books do you like to read: Dragon Masters

-- For Austin's birthday, he requested an airplane birthday cake. I asked him what he liked about his cake and he said "It was fun to look at. It was yummy." He's an airplane loving boy, and it makes me happy that he was pleased with this simple attempt at an airplane cake. He wanted to include this picture because he "still really loves airplanes".

--Austin says that when he grows up he wants to be a "builder"(recently changed into a "machine maker"). He has a natural curiosity and is very engaged when we do STEM activities. He likes exploring how things work together. Below we used salt and chalk to see what happened, we also used marshmallows and spaghetti to make towers. He spent a long time making his tower stand and was so very proud of himself. He builds a lot with blocks, magnet tiles, and pretty much anything else he can.

--He has his share of tantrums and fit throwing when he doesn't get his way, but he recovers quickly and doesn't hold a grudge. I appreciate that about him.

-I also feel like I need to add that we've been struggling with potty training and he's gone through a  major regression. Sometimes I worry that it's a sign of something deeper that is going on, and wonder if it's tied to his speech delay, but mostly I just try to be as patient as I can be with such frequent accidents. I wish I knew what to do to help him with the process but I just keep hoping that it will get better and that if I keep loving him and do my best to not get upset (which is really difficult sometimes) that it will work out. I wanted to include this because I think it's important to remember the difficult things along-side the good things - even if the good things far outweigh the bad.

---He's really good at calming down and presenting solutions to the problems we are facing. Sometimes I get really stubborn, even though he's presenting another solution to the issue and I have to remind myself that he should probably be rewarded for taking the time to think of another way to get what he wants instead of stubbornly insisting that I get my way. He's even gotten really good at asking for things like "Can I try again tomorrow?" Or "Can we buy another one next time we go to the store." and then calming himself down. I'm really impressed.

-He's also very stubborn. A lot of times the solutions he presents are really just another way for him to get exactly what he wants, without a whole lot of compromise. But as I said about, I really appreciate that he stops and tries to think of ways around the situation.

--Loves helping me in the kitchen. Whether it's doing dishes or making food, he's my number one helper. He helps me make pancakes and knows just what to put in next - and he loves using the measuring cup to make his own pancakes on the griddle. Basically, anything that I'm making from breads to breakfasts -he wants to help and is very interested in the whole process.

-Austin loves smoothies. He'd eat them for breakfast every day if he could.

-We read the Tale of Despereaux together as a family and decided that we would use that as the base for our Halloween Costumes. Austin wanted to be Despereaux and he loved his costume. It was perfect for him. The hat, the big ears, and especially the sword! He loved that needle/sword. He made a haul trick-or-treating and was pretty taken with the whole Halloween experience.

--He loves Lydia. They have this special "language" that they talk in called "Silly Language". They mostly just talk in garbled sounds and made up words. However, there are a few words that always mean the same thing. Austin's name in silly language is "Brees-la", Lydia calls him that and he definitely responds. I asked what her name is and they gave a few variations of "Fwee-da". That's all I know. It changes a lot, but it makes them happy to be speaking in their own language and I love watching the special relationship that they have together.

-He has loved all the snow we've gotten this year. He likes sledding and has spent a lot of time in our backyard with all the snow we've gotten this year.

-Talking Time. I don't have many pictures of this part of Austin's life - but it's a huge part of his life. We go to a class every Wednesday morning for an hour (plus 20 minutes of travel time each way). He has homework/sound practice that he works on every day. I've had lots of people tell me that they can understand him much better than they used to, and that gives me hope that this speech therapy is working, but it's hard for me to see much progress. I try to tell myself that I'm too close, but he often gets frustrated and I get frustrated too (not at him, just frustrated that I can't help more) when there seems to be such a lack of progress. He has been particularly working on the K- sounds and G- sounds which are hard. But he is working hard and I'm SO proud of him. When they first introduced the K sound, he couldn't even make the sound. He physically couldn't. But he has practiced and practiced and now he can! It takes much longer to translate into conversational speech, which is the frustrating part, but I'm truly so proud of how hard he works to make sounds that come so easily to other people.

-Christmas! The only thing that he asked for this year was a Snow Shooter. A real, genuine, snowshooter. One that made snow.  Similar to a bubble machine, but snow instead of bubbles. Oh man. I had no idea what we were going to do for him - because I was sure he was going to wake up on Christmas morning in utter disappointment. But I was telling a friend about it and her four-year-old daughter said: "That sounds like daddy's snow-cone machine". Yes! It was the perfect idea and he's been so happy with it.  He got a bunch of other things, too - but he was just so happy and grateful for all of the things. He's such a sweet boy and Christmas was magical for him this year.

-He gets into quite a lot of mischief when he follows Lydia's lead. Like putting every single thing that they owned into Lydia's bunk. Better than the times that it's every single soft thing on the floor so they can jump into it from the top bunk.

--Some pictures of him being sweet. He has a big heart and he is very affectionate. He is also learning to navigate big emotions and I hope that he always is able to keep his kind nature as the central part of his personality.

-- He likes to be just like his dad. He often requests to use "Daddy's shampoo" while in the bathtub, and will ask to use "Daddy's gel" when doing his hair. He uses David's deodorant (to the point that David has given him his own deodorant stick) and likes to pretend to shave after David is done in the morning. I love that he wants to be like his Daddy.

-Dentist appointment - no cavities! Woot!

-More examples of cooking and helping in the kitchen. Austin made this self-portrait out of pancake batter. He was so proud. Ha. Also, every Thursday we do this special activity called Poetry Treat Time. We make a snack together, set the table with china plates and cups, and read some poetry while eating the snack. I think it's tied with Tech-Tuesday for Austin's favorite part of our week. He loves helping make the snack, loves pouring the juice, and loves eating the snack.

-More building and experiments.

-We were given this shirt, and it quickly became Austin's favorite. He especially loves wearing it with these super tight grey leggings and I laugh EVERY time he wears it - he looks just like a Trekkie to me (Star Trek). He, obviously, has no idea. He just thinks it's comfortable. But I laugh all day long.
Star Trek Men's Deluxe Science Uniform Costume

-We went on a train ride to downtown Salt Lake and he loved the whole experience.

-He loves matching his clothes with Caleb and they do the funniest chest bump together when I dress them alike. The stick out their tummies and bump them up against each other and they both say "Matching!"

More pictures of him from the past six months. I wish I could remember all the tiny details of this stage right now. I know I'm forgetting SO many of them. But I guess the thing that I want him to remember most when he comes back someday to read about his childhood is that I loved him every single day. Austin, you are important to me - you always have been and you always will be. I love spending my days with you. Reading endless Magic Tree House and Dragon Masters books with you. Making food in the kitchen with you. Letting you play in the bath while I work on something in my bedroom. Watching you concentrate while you're building a structure or a "machine" and hearing you proudly say "Mom, look what I made!" Watching you be the best brother to your siblings. Just being with you.

I asked everyone what their favorite thing about Austin was, and these were the replies:
Daddy- "You know? There are a LOT of things that I love about Austin. But one of the things that I love most is his smile. And I love the way he laughs. When Austin laughs, it fills up the whole room with joy."
Mommy - "I love Austin's hugs. He knows when I'm feeling down and always makes me feel loved."
Lydia - "I like to play games with Austin. And he's nice."
Caleb- "Austin play?"

Dearest Austin, we love you. All of us. We are so lucky to have you in our family.
