[insert title here]

I don't really have a title for this post. Coming up with a title is intimidating sometimes. It seems a small thing, but oh well. I'm intimidated by a lot of things. Especially now that i'm a mom there are a lot of things that intimidate me. Everyone says "You're the mom, just do what you think is best" or, "You will know what to do... just use your instincts." But so much of the time I feel like I am floundering - just making up things as I go. Trying to decide how to get her on a schedule, when to let her cry, or when to rush in and make it all better. Sometimes its so hard. But even though I know that I am not perfect, the one thing that I know is that no one could love that little girl as much as I do. I'm sure I will make mistakes, but no one will ever be able to say that I didn't love Lydia with all of my heart.

This morning I looked out the window and saw Fall! I don't know how it happened, because Summer seemed like it was going to last forever. But as I look out this little window by my computer I can see that the leaves are changing colors and starting to fall and there is a cool Fall feeling in the air. I love summer, but there is just something about the changing of the seasons that makes my heart full. It just stopped raining, and it is beautiful outside.

In my last post I mentioned that Blogger says that i've exceeded my picture limit and now have to start paying. A couple of you said that this had already happened to you but that you just bucked up and paid the $5 a year. When I read that I was like "Oh! Maybe I read it wrong... I could do $5 a year." But when I went back to check, no, it's not $5 a year anymore. They must have upped their pricing because it comes out to be over $30 a year. Thirty dollars seems like a lot of money to me. Has anyone else found a way around this? Because I've got to do something if I want to be able to keep uploading pictures.

We went to the Brigham City Temple Dedication on Sunday and it was a beautiful thing. I spent some time in the days leading up to it, thinking about how big of a blessing it was to be able to attend something so special. I remember hearing about the early saints and the Kirtland temple dedication. It was such a huge thing to them, such a huge sacrifice for something they thought was so important. I can only imagine their joy to have the temple be completed and to be present as it was dedicated as a House of the Lord. As they sang The Spirit of God, angels surrounded the building and sang with them. I'm sure that what they saw was because of their faith. We are so lucky to live in a time where we see temple after temple build, and have the opportunity to attend dedication after dedication. It gets to be a little normal. But as we participated in the Hosanna Shout and sang The Spirit of God - I felt a connection to those early saints. What a miracle it is! I am so grateful to live in such a time where Gods work on the earth is rolling forth. I'm ashamed of how much I take for granted - but I am truly grateful for the spirit that I felt on Sunday. It was so special.

Lydia just woke up from her nap, and so i'm off to go cuddle my sweet girl. But I guess these were just a few random things I wanted to write about.

Five Things

The last couple weeks have been fun ones. I missed this Friday post last week, but i'm going to make up for it this week with some sweet photos.

#1- Last week, David went to Phoenix for an audit he was doing. He was gone for pretty much the whole week and so Lydia and I packed it up and headed to Morgan to hang out with my family. We missed him a lot, but it was really fun to spend the week in Morgan. (We watched the whole first season of "Hart of Dixie" with my mom and thought it was so cute!) And David also managed to have some fun while he was away (even though we know he missed us a lot, too). Here are some pictures of him at the Diamondbacks game!

 Go Diamondbacks!

#2- Before David took off for his trip, we were able to go out to eat at Taggarts Grill. Taggarts is pretty much the only "restaurant" in Morgan (and it's not really even in Morgan, it's in Taggart). But we've been wanting to go there together for a long time. In fact, at some point fairly early on in our dating - I promised David that I would take him there someday. He teases me about it occasionally because after more than four years... I still hadn't kept my end of the bargain. But we finally made it! My parents watched Lydia for us and we went and had a really nice time. (Thanks mom and dad!)We didn't get very good pictures, but after four years - my debt is finally paid!

#3- Also before David left, my dad helped us replace the CV joint in our car, Tinka. For several weeks now, I've been hearing a grinding noise whenever I turned. Having already experienced what happens when a CV joint completely breaks right in the middle of a left hand turn (and believe me - it is not pleasant) I was really worried. Luckily I have an awesome Dad and an awesome husband and after just a couple of hours our CV joint was as good as new. I failed to get any pictures of the process, but here is a picture of what a CV joint is. It is the wonderful thing that gives a car the ability to.. well... turn.
Image from here: How to tell if your CV joint is acting up.
I really am so grateful for my dad. He is always so willing to help and is so knowledgeable when it comes to cars (and building things, and fixing things, and making 3-D models of Calculus equations, and well pretty much everything!)

#4- While David was gone, Lydia and I were able to go to the Brigham City Temple Open House with my dad and brother. It was so much fun and so beautiful! I was sad that David couldn't come with us... but I am so glad that we were able to go. It was such a fun time. I can't wait to attend that temple with David. I especially loved all of the peach blossoms. I love how special and sacred the temple is, and is such a neat thing for anyone who is interested to come and see what we believe and why it is so important to us. If you are interested in learning more about temples or our church... please here - visit The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: Temples.

#5- Today Lydia and I got to go to a Pirate Party. The local history museum put on this little pirate party and so we just had to go. We went with my friend Ashley. She has a rambunctious two year old boy and a sweet baby girl who is pretty close to the same age as Lydia and we love playing together. I also volunteered to take another friend's kids because she recently was put on bedrest until her third is born. Man, it was quite the adventure trying to handle that many kids - but we had a good time.

Ashley and I.

My sweet little scallywag! Arrgggh.

She was so good the whole time and just kept chatting up a storm.

A cute and funny story about these friends. We went on a walk together yesterday, and then decided to go to the library. After we got there Ashley said that Carson had been saying "Hi Lyd-ja! Hi Lyd-ja!" the whole way to the library, while pointing to our car. We both thought it was so cute. (He is so good with both Lydia and his little sister Elsie.) We tried prompting him to do it again while we were at the Library but to no avail. After the library, we decided to stop off at the park. Ashley was holding Elsie, but Lydia was sleeping in her carseat so I was helping Carson climb a bendy-ladder to get up on the jungle gym. After a little bit, I walked back over to Ashley. Not too long later we heard this sweet little voice "Lyd-ja! Lyd-ja! Help! Lyd-ja!". We were confused at first, but then realized that Carson thought that my name was Lydia! It was SO funny, but totally makes sense... because anytime that Carson sees me... I am always holding Lydia and Ashley always says "Say hi to Lydia!" He just associated that name with me. It was so cute. We worked on changing my name to Lydia's Mom - and I loved that! It was the first time that i've really been known as Lydia's Mom. It was sweet.

p.s. I've had this horrible error keep popping up when I try to upload photos to blog. It says that my blog is full and I can't upload any more pictures unless I upgrade my blogger and start paying. I do NOT want to start paying for my free blog. Have any of you experienced this? What did you do? It's like like I post SO often or SO many pictures! I'm really upset. So far i've been able to work around the error by using pictures from the internet and not just the ones on my computer -but it's seriously a problem. I don't know what to do.

twenty-five

On September 15, 2012 - I turned a quarter of a century old.

I'll be honest - it doesn't feel that different.

But regardless of how different it does or doesn't feel, I think that twenty-five is quite the milestone. I've done a lot with my little life. Graduated with my associates degree and high school degree at the same time. Graduated from a great school with a bachelors degree. Moved across the country. Married an amazing man. Gave birth to a beautiful baby girl.

Yep. My twenty-five years have been filled to bursting with adventure and accomplishment.

It's crazy to think about what the next 25 years will bring. Hopefully raising a houseful of happy bouncing children. I see lots of summer days with no shoes and lots of water. I see dinners, and homework, and piano lessons, and family home evenings. I see barbecue pizzas and homemade play-dough; Halloween costumes and birthday presents; hide-and-seek and red-rover. I'm sure that there will be my fair share of tantrums, late nights, and stubbed toes, too. But it will be wonderful.

David really spoiled me for my birthday. He made me breakfast (with lots of bacon), left me little notes throughout the day for where I could find my next present, and took me to "Arsenic and Old Lace"at the Hale. It was a really fantastic day. (Which ended with a disheartening loss by both our Aggies and the Cougars. Both games ended with a missed field-goal to win in the final seconds. We still aren't talking about it.) I am really lucky to have such a great guy who loves me so much. Unfortunately, we didn't get a single picture. (I know, how lame.) But, along with a new watch and a cute new diaper bag, David gave me the money to build this beauty in our new house:

I am SO so excited. We popped out the window in our staircase for this exact purpose. We agreed that it would be a "down-the-line" project, but I just love it so much. David knew how excited I am and so he found the money to make it a "sooner-rather-than-later" project. Did I mention that I am SO so so excited? Plans are for this to be our book-reading space. Can you see us curled up reading picture books on a rainy day with a child on each lap? It's going to be so fun.

In other birthday news:

Today, I went shopping as a birthday celebration for myself. Lyd and I had a great time. I ended up buying a new outfit and a couple of shirts. As I was trying things on in the dressing room, Lydia was laying on the floor on a blanket and she was talking up a storm. Screeching and cooing and laughing - I couldn't help but laugh. I'm sure the people who were also in the dressing room thought that we were crazy, but she was being so cute and so good. The outfit that I got is a little outside what I normally wear, but I think it's cute - and I pinned something very similar into my Pinterest closet. I figured, what the heck - I will never have the cute clothes that I want to be able to wear unless I just start buying them  one at a time. None of this drooling over cute clothes and then going to the store and buying the same old boring pair of jeans. I'm ready to live life! Haha, besides... who doesn't want to dress like Kate Middleton, eh?
Picture from here. Check it out because, really she is so stylish.  I love her.
My cute friend Amy also has a darling pair of these coral skinny jeans - and just today I was thinking about how cute they were. So when I was at the store and I saw some on the rack I thought about Amy, thought about Kate, and then decided to give it a go. Anyway. I think they are cute - even if they are a little different than my normal Shantel attire.

It was a fun way to celebrate my birthday with my sweet baby - who by the way is getting so big! She is starting to hold herself up all on her own while sitting on your lap. She is going to be sitting by herself in no time. I wish that I took a picture of the two of us, but I didn't.

Now I'm starting to ramble a little, but the moral of this story is that I am 25 and loving it. I'm so grateful to all the family and friends who called, or facebooked, or texted me birthday love. (And especially to my parents for the presents and delicious chocolate-raspberry Jello cake.) I'm one lucky quarter-of-a-century-old girl!

Lydia: 3-4 Months

Lydia turned four months old on September 6th. She is still such a happy baby and she is getting so big. I have seen several newborn babies lately and can hardly believe that Lydia was once so small! When I feed her, her little legs hang off my lap and are constantly poking out from underneath her feeding cover. She not only smiles, but she has started giggling as well. It's probably the sweetest thing i've ever heard.

Here are some other things that happened this last month (the month of August):

--At her 4 month doctors visit she weighed 13 lbs 5 oz and was 23.5 inches long.

-At about 3 1/2 months she just started to grab things and bring them to her mouth. I was amazed when she did it for the first time. It's like she learned overnight! Now if you hand her anything, it goes straight for her mouth. Its crazy to think that just a couple of weeks ago she couldn't grab things (she would bat them around with her hands, but not really grab them - and definitely not bring them to her mouth.)

-She is constantly sucking on her hands and will sometimes gag herself in her attempts to fit them both into her mouth at the same time. She will gag, make a disgruntled noise, and then go back to trying to shove her hands in her mouth. She has also started to suck on her thumb more - as she is better able to control her fingers to get just her thumb in her mouth - but she still won't take a binky. Oh, and a really new development is that she has started sucking on her wrist while "talking" making muted talking/sucking sounds.

-I'm so glad not to be going back to school. I wondered if I would be sad when my friends started teaching again, but it really didn't even phase me. I had a few "back to school" teaching nightmares, mostly involving me not showing up and then getting into huge amounts of trouble when my students were there without a teacher. But I can honestly say that I am so happy to just have this time with Lydia. I know that not everyone is able to stay home with their babies, and I am just really grateful that I can.

--Even though at her appointment, L was below the 30th percentile in weight, she still seems to be gaining really well. Her arms and legs are getting super pudgy and I love her little baby rolls. Even her cheeks are filling out and she has developed the most darling dimple when she smiles really big. I love it.

--Pretty soon after she hit three months, Lydia started rolling onto her side. She would roll up onto her side and then flop back onto her back, shifting her body just slightly. She would lay on her blanket or under her toy gym and repeat this motion while her body pivoted around her head. It was so funny to watch her slowly turning herself around in a circle!

--On August 25th, my girl rolled over for the first time! A week or so later and she was practically a pro. Now she rolls over in seconds and will hardly stay on her back. At her well-check the doctor seemed surprised that she could already roll, and even more surprised that she was rolling from her back to her front! I know it's not that unusual - but it made me feel good to have such a developmentally-appropriate/ahead baby. Now we just need to get her rolling from her front to her back.

--At about 3 1/2 months Lydia graduated to size 2 diapers!

--Lydia is doing better at sleeping in her bed. We have definitely made progress (meaning that she doesn't sleep with us in our bed at all anymore) but she wakes up 3-4 times a night. It's starting to become really draining and in the past couple of weeks, I feel like it's gotten worse. I've read a couple of books and they totally contradict each other so i've come up with this psuedo-plan taking bits and pieces from each. But now I feel as though everything is just out of control. I hope that we get this figured out soon.

--One of my best friends, Kayla, moved back to Washington DC this month. Kayla and her baby boy Landon stayed at our house the night before they left and we took them to the airport. They were so sweet together, and I may be making arrangements for them to marry each other when they grow up.

--Lydia has stopped cooing as much as she used to. Now she usually only makes "talking" noises as she is falling asleep in the car or in her swing. It's sad because I love to listen to her - but i'm sure it's just a phase and soon she will be talking so much I won't be able to get her to stop.

--We have had a crazy month and Lyd has been such a trooper through the whole thing. From house meetings, appliance shopping, grocery store-ing, and everything else we've had going on - she is always as sweet as can be. I'm grateful for such a content baby. (It makes the night time thing much easier to handle because in the day she is so good.)

Five Things

#1- Lydia had her 4 month checkup yesterday. She weighed 13.5 lbs and was 23.5 inches long! Poor little girl was such a champ through her shots. I was standing in the middle, letting her suck on my finger, and there were two nurses (one on either side). They gave her the shots at the same time. At first she stopped sucking on my finger and gave a little cry - then sucked in a huge breath like she couldn't breathe and then she started screaming. It broke my little heart. But I picked her up and wrapped her in her blanket and she calmed down. I spent the rest of the day rubbing her legs and playing "patty-cake" or bicycle to help work it out. I love my sweet little girl. (You can see her bandaids in the movie below.)

#2- Lydia has giggled a couple of times, but only realyl laughed once and she wouldn't repeat it. However, yesterday we got on camera her first real repetitive laugh. It is so cute and funny. I was holding her on my hip and as I was trying to replace the garbage bag in our trash can I started waving the bag around (you know, so the air will open it up?) and she started laughing! I was surprised at first... but then I realized that she thought it was funny. We spend the next several minutes playing with her and making her laugh. It makes me giggle just thinking about it.

#3- We had our "Home Start" meeting! That means that they can get started with all of the paperwork and start digging the hole soon. We had the chance to look over all of the official home plans and they look awesome. We couldn't be more thrilled.

#4- Over Labor Day weekend we bought a fridge, a washer, and a dryer! We got them all on really great sales and we are really excited. The washer and dryer are white - but we were really close to buying the red ones. However, I decided that I liked the actual functions of the white ones better... and I want to paint my laundry room either blue or green. Neither would look good with a red washer and dryer. But... I am going to try to convince my dad to make me this:

#5- Utah State 27 Utah 20.  We are full of Aggie pride around here and last night was a huge success for us last night. Everyone always rags on how bad Utah State is at Football - but we love our team and always love when other people have to look our way. In fact, Last night we were picking up some treats at Maceys when we heard an announcement over their PA. It was about the "big game" starting in just a couple of minutes and a reminder to pick up the game day special. It ended with "GooooOOOOO Utes!" When we got to the register, David (dressed in his Aggie game day attire) protested by filing a formal complaint about not having both teams represented equally well. He was explaining to here that there are lots of Aggie fans around here and they deserved to be cheered on as well. I quote, "I'm still going to buy these groceries, but i'm not happy about it!"  We are so proud of our Aggies!
David found this picture for me: from here.

Gettin' caught in the rain...

Lyd and I were feeling a little cooped up in the house today and I decided that we both needed some fresh air. I told her that we were going to go for a walk and then packed us up. (When you have a baby, even just going for a walk requires a thorough diaper bag check and fill up.) I bundled her up in her awesome carseat/stroller and we were off.

It was a beautiful day, a little cloudy but still warm. I was happy to be getting out of the house and Lydia seemed pleased to be outside. She was looking around, taking it all in. We decided to take a walk on the walking/bike path that is close to our house - and so I headed in that direction. I've seen this path a million times, but i've never actually used it before. I thought I remembered seeing a park from the road - so I figured we would just walk along the path and see what we found. Then if there was actually a park, we would set down a blanket and spend some time there. As we were walking it started to sprinkle a little. I was surprised because when we left the house I had noticed that it was cloudy, but it didn't look menacing. I was really into this excursion so I decided not to turn back. I kept walking for another 25 feet or so. Then, all of the sudden - the rain started to really come down! I did the only thing I could do - I sprinted for shelter. The path goes under I-15 and so we bolted to the underpass for some shelter.

I had to laugh at our adventure. And then I did what any self-respecting blogger would do.

I took a picture.

Lucky for me, I had an umbrella in the diaper bag (always be prepared, right?).

I pulled it out and kept walking for a little bit, venturing out from under the overpass - thinking that maybe the rain would let up by the time we made it to the park. But then I decided that I was being silly and that we should probably just head home. By the time we were walking back up to our apartment the rain was starting to let up. Our adventure lasted a whole 40 minutes.

Regardless of the rain, I had a great time with Lydia. It was nice to get out, if only for a minute - and fun to have made this memory with my little girl. Isn't she darling? I love that she will totally look at the camera now. I am lucky to have such a beautiful and well-behaved little baby. She took the adventure in stride - not complaining once. I think that fresh air did us both good.

Chicago - June 2012

I've been looking through photos the last couple of days and realized that I need to play catch up with a couple of big things that happened this summer. So here goes:

During June - David took a trip to Chicago for a training for his work. He had a lot of fun, even though we missed him a lot. Usually when he travels for work, he isn't able to do too much because they work really late hours. But, because this was a training they had their evenings free and were able to do some fun things. I've always wanted to go to Chicago - so I was a little jealous. Looking back on it... I don't know why Lydia and I didn't just go with him. We should have. I can just imagine the three of us standing in front of this beautiful river in the city. So amazing.

One of the first things that they did in Chicago was to visit the aquarium. It's one of the best in the US and they had a really great time.

I don't know what this big macaroni noodle is doing - but you have to admit. It's pretty cool. Especially because it is right in front of Wrigley Field. I don't know a true sports lover who wouldn't absolutely LOVE to go to Wrigley Field -and now David has checked it off his bucket list. When we were flying to Florida for our Honeymoon, we passed over Chicago in the middle of the night. David stayed up just so he could look down and see the stadium. I remember him telling me about how he wanted to go there someday. I'm so happy that he was able to go.

I may have to photoshop this one so that it says "Cubs welcome David Peaden". Wouldn't that be cool?
These are stands in nearby buildings so that even more people can view the field. Neat.

Another highlight of the trip was dinner at Giordano's.

You may ask... why Giordano's? And in reply I will give you this picture:

Yeah. A slice of pizza as large as your head. MMMMmmmmmm.

David had a great time in Chicago - and we are so glad he was able to go. (Even though we missed him like crazy.) David works so hard and it's nice that he has such a great job. We love HBM and are grateful for the opportunity that he has to work for them. (And go on awesome paid trainings to sweet places like Chicago!)
