Homeschool in the Fall is so fun because there are so many fun things to go do and it's still warm enough outside to go do them. I feel like November starts to transition from "Fall Fun" to "Holiday Festivities" which brings it's own kind of fun. I feel like we settled into our routine a little better this month though. Our two big trips: one in September and one in October, weren't exactly stellar for keeping us in a steady routine. Some of my favorite things that we are doing right now:
-Memorizing "My Brother Built a Robot" by Jack Prelutsky. I love this poem, it's delightful.
-Lydia has a planner and each Monday we sit down and go over her past week's work and outline what things she needs to accomplish this week, then she gets to choose when and how she completes her assignments. It's working really well for us.
-Austin is taking a reading class M-Th mornings and it's going really well.
In addition to our regular routine, here are some other things we were up to:
-Lydia's Art class
-Hale Center Theater to see "Spookly the Pumpkin" - as always, it was darling! They do such a good job.
-We went to the Layton SeaQuest Aquarium, which is unique because there are so many interactive exhibits. We fed birds, otters, turtles, and sharks. Lydia went into the "wild cat" exhibit and got to play with the cats (which were essentially house cats but she still loved it), and we got to stick out hands into a big tank of water and let all the little fish come eat the dead skin off our hands.
I surprised the kids by taking them to the planetarium because they really really really wanted to go. We were driving past salt lake and had a couple of hours so I just stopped on a whim. It was so peaceful because we weren't with any other families, the kids got to wander around and play, and just I listened to my audio book while they were engaged in the exhibits around them. I didn't feel any pressure to make sure they were learning or staying with a big group or anything and it was a really fun afternoon.
-Our Monday Coop is going well. I can't remember if I already wrote about this, but we lost access to the building that we were in and ended up moving the coop down to Lindon. I volunteered to help with things and am now the co-directer of the coop. It's a neat opportunity, but not exaclty what I signed up for this year. Thankfully the other codirector is incredible and I love rubbing shoulders with her. I'm grateful that we were able to keep the coop running and we are enjoying the classes the kids are in (and the ones that I am teaching).
-I wanted to write a little tidbit about Lucy because she sometimes gets overlooked in the homeschool sphere, but I adore this little three-year-old so much. She's such a good homeschooler and often plays with her babies or her kinetic sand while we are doing school. One of my favorite things that she does right now is that she asks me to draw her, usually as a baby, and other people with her. Usually, it's the Haderlie girls, but sometimes she wants me to draw her, Lydia, and me - and I love it.
I can't believe November is over - Christmas Schooling here we come!
