Little Friends

I've been doing quite a bit of babysitting lately. For someone who once thought that she would never even consider having an in-home daycare, we have quite the flow of kids in and out of our home each week. And you know what? I pretty much love it. Tuesdays and Thursdays I get to watch the Cooper Crew for a few hours in the afternoon, plus a handful of other random kids throughout the rest of the week. A couple of weeks ago, by Wednesday - I'd had ten extra kids at one point or another. By the end of today (Tuesday) I will have had six extras (plus two that came over Monday night with their parents). Sometimes we'll be outside saying goodbye, and my neighbor Katie will jokingly ask "How many today?"

I ran into a good friend from the ward next to ours at a neighborhood music class, and she introduced me to one of her friends as being the Queen of all Babysitters (or something along those lines). And a lot of the time when she drops off her daughter for our Babysitting-Swap (so amazing!) there are other kids here, or kids who are just leaving. But I feel a little weird about it. It's not like I'm really good at babysitting (at least not any better than anyone else), or that I love it especially much. But I don't mind having kids over, especially if it's a help to their parents. I'm not good at so many things, especially service-wise, but I feel like I can help other moms out who just need a couple of hours for a doctors appointment, or to take a nap after having a new baby, or whatever they need. It's something I can do, and at this particular time in our lives we can handle a larger amount of kids than we have been able to before. Lydia enjoys having friends over, and in most cases they entertain each other while I am able to do some laundry or the dishes or whatnot without feeling like I'm not giving my kids enough attention. It's pretty win-win.
I've just recently started watching the Coopers on Thursday in addition to Tuesday. I don't write about this a lot, but I love these kids so much. And Ashley, their mom, is such a blessing to me. There is something so comforting about knowing that you have a friend there for you all the time. Most of the time it's for random gmail chatting about which swimsuit style to order, or a funny story from the day, but those things mean the world to me. (And other days, like today, it was messaging her to ask if she could come pick me up from the side of the road if I got stranded taking my broken down car to the mechanic, which resulted in her sending her mechanic husband to my house so I didn't have to drive my poor sad car.) Lydia asks pretty much every day if "Carson-Elsie" are coming over, and the bonus is that I get to chat with Ashley in person at least a couple of times a week.

Lydia has lots of friends that she loves - but almost every time she says a prayer (other than the prayers that are shorter than two seconds) she says "Thank you for Henry." This little friend is super special to us.

Recently we had the chance to visit with some new-ish friends. Kajsa and I met at Utah State when she started dating her husband, who happened to be David's roommate. We really only met a couple of times, but we became facebook friends - then blogging friends, we've stayed in touch and gotten pretty close.

I've been reflecting recently how interesting it is that there are really only a few people whose blogs I still follow and most of them are women that I was only acquaintances with in person. Now I look forward to their posts, comment like we are best friends, and admire them incredibly. I realized that it's because although I might not have spent a lot of time with them originally, as we've grown we've developed similar attitudes about mothering, families, and life. These blogging-friends inspire me to remain faithful in time of trial, remind me to enjoy my time as a mother, crazy as it might be, and encourage me to keep blogging this little record of our life.

Kajsa is one such friend. She writes beautifully and is able to convey things that I think/feel in such a great way. Austin and her youngest, Declin, were born just hours apart - and it was so fun to read about her pregnancy and to watch Declin and Austin grow up so similarly. She doesn't live close, so we haven't ever spent time together in person, but recently she was visiting her family in Salt Lake County and we arranged to get together. I'm so glad we did! It was so fun to visit with her in person. Our kids got along great and played pirates and tag and all sorts of games. We chatted and picked right up where our blogs left off. (The Coopers happened to be there for part of the time and they loved Kajsa's kids, too.)

We tried to get a good picture of the five of our kids (she has one just older and one just younger than Lydia), but as you can imagine it was quite the task. The best picture I got was a "just one last try" but Declin was already in the car.

Although our house is kind of crazy most of the time. This is a good time of life. We are enjoying all of our little friends and I'm blessed to be surrounded by such good adult-friends, too.

A lunch date.

It's no secret that David has been putting in a lot of hours at work lately. He pushes so hard through the day and somehow still has the energy to play and show how much he loves us when he's home. He tries to make sure he either gets to see the kids in the morning or at night and I can't express how grateful I am for that. The kids love him and being able to see him at least once a day is going a long way - even though they miss him. Lydia's taken to asking when she gets to see him again and then blocking his way to the door and telling him she doesn't want him to leave. (Seriously, I know it makes it hard for him to leave when we're all begging him to stay - but we just love him so much.)

This week he was passing from Salt Lake to Provo (to a client's office) right during lunch time so he stopped and took us out to lunch at SLAB pizza just around the corner from us. We'd never been before and it was pretty good, although - no plates or knives which made cutting up pizza for kids a little difficult. (And I'm pretty sure they just threw the extra 1/4 pizza away because we only ordered 3 slabs. David and I were both shocked! And we spent a good while later than night trying to figure out a better business model for them.) But it was SO nice to see him during the day, especially with good food at a fun restaurant. We all loved it.

We're half-way through March. So just another month of being superbusy+Saturdays. Then maybe another month past that of being superbusy but minus the Saturdays. (I hope!) Then Summer! We can make it until Summer, right? Except that I already feel like it should be summer. (It's really the Saturdays that push the busyness over the edge. I think if we can make it until we have Saturdays back it will go a long way.

---

I had terrible dreams last night. Just really weird and upsetting. Austin woke up and David went and got him and brought him into our bed, but I was having a hard time shaking the yucky feelings and stress from my dream. David stayed in bed longer than he should have and just held my hand (with Austin between us) until I was sure that all of the bad-ness wasn't real and that everything was really okay. And when I told him that in my dream I made a mistake and owed someone 55 thousand dollars, he told me that even if that was real life he would help me find a way to pay it. I laughed and asked if he had that extra money laying around, but he told me that he'd get a loan from the bank then get a second job to pay it off. I can't believe how lucky I am to have such a loving and hard working man to call my own. He truly is my best friend, and when he's gone all day I just can't wait for him to come home at night because I never feel as happy or as loved as I do when I'm with him. He walks in the door amid chaos and he turns everything to happiness. (Even when he's had a hard day at work, he never takes it out on us. I wish I could say the same thing about myself.)

I guess there's not much of a point to this post other than record our fun lunch date and to remind myself how lucky the kids and I are to have such a hard-working and loving Daddy in our lives.

A stool and a table.

Lydia's always been a climber and Austin has definitely followed in those footsteps. Or, er... footholds.

The other day I walked into the kitchen and about had a heart attack because not only was Austin on the table, but he was standing on top of our two-step kitchen stool on top of the table. Yikes!

Apparently, Austin had climbed on top of the table and was trying to reach the light that hangs overhead. Lydia understood his desire so she went and got the stool and somehow managed to get it on top of the table. (It's pretty heavy, so I don't know how she did this.) Austin then climbed up on top of the stool, on top of the table to touch the light. I entered this adventure as he was trying to get back down and wasn't sure how to do it.

You might be thinking "What were you doing that left your children unsupervised for such a long period of time!?!" But seriously, I was only gone for a couple of minutes - upstairs to switch the laundry or some such thing.

These kids of ours! So adventurous. So lacking that "danger" filter that keeps other kids from attempting things like this. Hahaha. I obviously didn't get a picture - because it was obvious that Austin was seconds away from falling. I pulled him off and asked Lydia why she had put the stool on the table and she said "He wanted to touch the light! I was just trying to help him." (In her sweetest Lydia voice.)

I was sitting in Primary, which Austin was attending with me, and he kept climbing on top of a chair next to me, then sliding back off, just to get up and pull himself up onto it again. One of the sisters that I work with leaned over and mentioned how impressed she was because her little girl wouldn't dare to do that. I laughed and told her the story about the stool on the table and she told me that I needed to write it down! It's pretty typical of our lives right now, the two of them teaming up to get in all sorts of trouble then laughing to each other about it. I love watching them interact, splashing and giggling in the bathtub, playing hide-and-seek, or chasing each other outside on the grass. They are the best of friends and I love that they love each other - even if it might make me go gray prematurely!
