Putting Out Fire
Question:
“What is the fastest way to put out a candle?”
Research:
Fire needs three things to burn - FUEL, HEAT & OXYGEN
To put out a fire you need to take one of these three things away.
Hypothesis:
I believe that the fastest way to put out a candle is to blow on it and that removing oxygen is the easiest thing to remove to put out fire.
Supplies:
7 Small Candles (plus extras)
Lighter
Plates, bowls, cups
Baking Soda & Vinegar
Freezer
Rootbeer & balloon
Water
Procedure:
I will try seven different methods to blow out a candle and see which one is fastest and to see which of the three things that fire needs is easiest to remove.
1-Blow out the candle with air from my mouth.
2-Put a cup over it to cut off its oxygen.
3- Put it in the freezer where it is very cold.
4-Put the candle in a pool of water to see if the vacuum caused by the candle using the oxygen will pull the water over the candle.
5-Pour Carbon Dioxide over the candle flame.
6-Create a mini-Fire Extinguisher using baking soda and vinegar.
7- Let Candle Burn out.

Conclusion:
My hypothesis was right. The easiest way to put out a candle was just to blow it. The most fun way was to use the baking soda and vinegar as a mini-fire-extinguisher. The longest way was to let the candle run out of fuel. The only way that didn’t work was putting it in the freezer because we couldn’t make it cold enough. I liked this project because I like fire.

Hi, my name is Austin Peaden. I wanted to learn about different ways you can put out a fire. I decided my question would be “What is the fastest way to put out a candle?”
My research taught me that fire needs three things to burn - FUEL, HEAT & OXYGEN
To put out a fire you need to take one of these three things away.
My hypothesis was that the fastest way to put out a candle is to blow on it. I thought that removing oxygen would be the easiest thing to remove.
I tried seven different ways to put out a candle. I liked trying so many different things.
I found that it was much easier to remove the oxygen from the Fire triangle and much harder to remove the heat & fuel.
The fastest way to put out a candle was just to blow on it. The most fun way was to use the baking soda and vinegar as a mini-fire-extinguisher. The longest way was to let the candle run out of fuel. The only way that didn’t work was putting it in the freezer because we couldn’t make it cold enough.
I liked this project because I like fire.
