After we started celebrating Christmas morning at home, we started switching off which family we celebrate Christmas Day with (for many years after we were first married we did Christmas Eve/Morning with the Walkers and Christmas Afternoon/Evening with the Peadens, but it was just too much to balance with our kids and we had to make a change). This year was the Walkers turn for Christmas day. We got to Morgan in time for lunch and after a short time of being there the kids were presented with their Christmas gift. They were thrilled!
Less thrilling was the fact that the Haderlies woke up not feeling well and Aunt Melissa canceled because she was still on the mend from being sick last week. Matt and Brooklyn are celebrating Christmas at their home in Texas this week and so it was just us and Jacob joining my parents and grandma for Christmas.
We made the most of it with leatherworking, puzzle doing, 7-layer-bean-dip eating, and Christmas present playing.
All in all it was a really nice Christmas day, even though we missed everyone who wasn't there.
The next day was Sunday and even though a blizzard blew in, we made it to church just fine due to the shoveling efforts of my dad and his trainees (Lydia and Austin).
When we got home the Haderlies (who were feeling better) had arrived! Not too long after, Melissa arrived, too. That was the moment that it truly felt like Christmas. There is something magical about celebrating the holidays with cousins and my siblings and we made the most of the limited time we had together.
Games, food, laughter, love. I love this home and these people.
We also took the chance to celebrate my dad and his retirement! He officially retired on December 16th and we are so happy for him. Two years ago we made him a paper chain to count down his retirement and because he ended up retiring a little early, he had some extra chains. We each took one, ripped it up into little pieces, and threw them in the air like confetti. I had a little bear made out of one of his old work shirts and we also found an old resume of his that we copied and added a new "beginning of retirement" resume of all of the wonderful things he has accomplished as our dad.
Other celebrations included the best biscuits we've ever tasted + a "Biscuit Bash: A Festival of Biscuits" with biscuits and gravy, biscuit egg sandwiches, jam, nutella, and honey. It was amazing.
We love this super-old game called "Whatzit?". It's got to be 30 years old at least. It gives pictures made from words and you have to come up with the common idiom/phrase that matches. It's hilarious because there are a lot of outdated phrases (remember it's like 30 years old). We just really enjoy it and it's a quirky thing that we like to pull out occasionally. The card above? "Love at first sight."
