Shantel and I decided to do continute doing homeschool for Lydia and Austin through My Tech High this year. We really felt like homeschool has been such an incredible benefit for Lydia and think it will be so good for Austin this year.
I thought it would be nice to write down some of our thought's here about each of them.
Lydia: We had been thinking she may go to public school this year or that we would at least consider it. However, with all the uncertainty about what school will be like, wearing masks, and whether it will have to be remote, it made so much sense to keep doing homeschool. Lydia is doing so well and is thriving with homeschool and she can have another great year this year. It is so nice to be able to get funding through My Tech High to buy her curriculum and activities. One of the things we were hoping she would develop through homeschool was greater confidence in herself and individualism. In kindergarten, she tended to just believe and do whatever others said. She lacked confidence in herself. I have seen how her confidence has swelled. She is now much better at making her own choices and standing up for the things she knows to be right. We are so excited for her this year. She will keep using The Good and the Beautiful for both Language Arts and Math. We are just working on figuring out what do for science and some of the other classes now. I know that she will have a great 3rd grade year. She is so lucky to be able to have Shantel as her teacher.
Austin: We are so excited for Austin to do homeschool and really feel like it will be the very best thing for him. He has been working hard on speech therapy and making progress, but it can still be difficult to understand him. In addition, he talks pretty quietly, which makes that even harder in a school setting. Lastly, if he was wearing a mask, that would make it impossible. At home, he will be able to communicate and that won't impede him from learning math and language arts. We really feel like this will be so important for him in Kindergarten. Eventually, his speech won't make it difficult to understand him, and being able to do homeschool allows him to progress and not struggle with other things just because talking can be difficult. I am so grateful that Shantel is able to stay home with our kids and that she is willing to do homeschool so that she can guide our children and their development. Especially this year for Austin, her work will benefit him for the rest of his life. We and Austin are excited to do homeschool Kindergarten and think he will have an amazing year.
Just as a note about public school. We are so grateful for public school and the many teachers and others who work to educate children. We are grateful to have the option to do homeschool and also, the ability to send our kids back to public school if we needed it. That is part of why we like My Tech High. Austin and Lydia will both be enrolled in a local school district and then they are part of My Tech High. This means that the local school district still receives funding for Lydia and Austin, My Tech High earns money to administer the program and then we get money to buy books and supplies needed to teach our children. It has been a wonderful thing for our family. And lastly, what a blessing that Shantel is willing to take this role as mother and teacher, there is no one better for our kids to learn from.
