COVID-19 Update: August

The last couple of COVID updates have not been great, but this one is improved.

We'll start with the big news first, Shantel tested negative for COVID-19, Yay! We were so relieved. We still had to finish our quarantine, but were so glad those she came in contact with did not have to quarantine or worry.

When I posted around July 12 and July 19 the US numbers were as bad as they had been. Cases peaked around 75,000 new cases per day. Since then, there has been improvement and now cases are around 50,000 new cases per day. Utah was also peaking at that time with multiple days over 800 cases and now cases are commonly 300-400. The governor set a goal for the rolling average to drop below 500 cases per day by August 1 and that looked impossible, but was achieved. Most improvement coincided with increased requirements to wear masks.

Here is where things stand today.

For Utah (July 12 rolling average was almost 700) and is now under 500.

Total cases are now 4.7 million. You can see the 7 day rolling average peaked a few weeks ago and has improved. Cases peaked around 75,000 and are now closer to 50,000.

We feel fortunate that we did not get sick after coming in contact with Kayla and are doing well. We are grateful. The quarantine went by pretty fast and now we've been able to see a few people again.

Here are a few pictures from our quarantine week.

On Sunday we did a fancy dinner and it was so nice to use the china and do something fancy.

There was a lot of playing outside. Lydia found a little snake.

I was facilitating firmwide training (Assurance Advantage via Zoom) this week. I had planned to go to the office to do it and even had special permission, but had to do it from home instead. We moved my office to the basement for the week so I could do it without interruptions.

We started reading Harry Potter with Lydia (I'll do a separate post later).

We organized a few of the bedrooms (still recovering from basement shuffling of stuff). We also found a few things we are going to sell and make more room.

On Sunday at the end of our quarantine we went on a tour to see as many temples as we could (I'll also post on that later).

The other big thing that has been happening is that people are trying to decide what to do with their kids for school. Shantel and I are so grateful that we just know what we are doing and can homeschool are kids and don't have to worry about all the concerns with the other options. We have spent way more time than we should talking about the options, but we have a lot of friends trying to decide what to do. It is challenging for people to know what is best for their family. It is also so hard for schools to try and plan what to do and make people happy. What an incredible blessing that we were prompted a few years ago to start homeschooling and we are prepared now and it will be so good for our kids this year. We have been doing a lot of discussion on curriculum and buying things to get ready and it has been awesome.
