Five Things

Five things... short but sweet style.

#1- Lydia has started sleeping much better in her bed. We are still using an adjusted version of Babywise, but I put the Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby book (that so many of you recommended)  on hold and will be picking it up from the library tomorrow. I hope that it works for us even better.

#2- We love the Olympics. My favorite this week: Ribbon Dancing (Or Rhythmic Gymnastics or whatever it is called.) Davids favorite: BMX biking.

#3- My car key broke off in the ignition. This makes the top five because even though I was quoted "between $15 and $90 depending on the degree of difficulty" - in the end it only cost $9.52 to have them remove the broken section and make a new key. Awesome, yeah?

#4-We were able to get together with five of David's high school friends and their spouses. It was a fun night and interesting to see where each of them have ended up.

#5- Season 3 of White Collar has been released to Netflix. You can't even imagine the celebration when we received the e-mail notification that it was now online. Due to the Olympics, we have been holding off... because we know that once we start we won't be able to stop. Also, on a Netflix related note... I found a new show that I really love! Warehouse 13. I've really been enjoying it. Oh, and the other night we watched a cute chick-flicky movie that is pretty unique called "Mark of Love", if you want to check it out. (For you netflixers out there, any other suggestions?)

Happy Friday!

Lydia: 1-2 Months

Lydia's second month was just as wonderful as her first. We stuck around the house significantly more than we did during her first month. This might seem counter-intuitive, but with so many things going on I feel like the first month we were always go-go-go. The second month we tended to stay home and love on each other all day.

Some things that I want to remember about Month 1-2:

--At her two month appointment she weighed 10 lbs 13 oz and was 21 inches long. She is a great eater, and it really shows! Her face has filled out a lot and she has a darling little belly that is starting to poke out. Her legs are starting to fill out as well, she has one little roll in her legs and it's the sweetest thing.

--Lydias first smile. Oh my goodness - it was melt your heart beautiful. I'd never seen anything so amazing. Every time she smiles, I get a glimse of what life is going to be like with her at two years, ten years, and twenty years. She is such a happy personality and I know she is going to have a great love of life.
Although she smiles a lot, her smile is elusive. I have yet to catch a really good smile on the camera.
--We finally were able to get her in her swing. Prior to this time, she would cry if we set her down in it. We celebrated the first time that she laid contently in the swing - and have been celebrating ever since. It is so nice to be able to have her in the kitchen area with me, while still allowing me to be able to get things done (like make dinner, clean up, work on Red Ladder things, etc...)

--She found her hands. It was amazing to see her figuring out how to move her hands to her mouth so she could suck on them. Her movements became much less jerky (not exactly smooth, but less jerky).

--Tummy time has been quite the obstacle. She really, really, really hates it. And I'm such a wimp that I give in after just a couple of minutes - every time. It just breaks my heart to see her facedown crying. I've tried all sorts of things: propping her up on her elbows, using the boppy pillow, being on the floor, being on the couch. It's no good. She just really doesn't like it. I feel pretty okay about it, because she has a really strong neck and sits up ALL the time (when we are holding her). It's just the laying down thing that she doesn't like.

--David had a training for work in Chicago, so he left us for a week to go out and work.  We missed him a lot, but we were comforted that at least he was eating well!

--Almost exactly two months from when she was born (July 1st) - Lydia was blessed. These are pictures that I want to remember from that day. Read about the blessing HERE and HERE.

--Lydia started talking to us this month! It was such a wonderful thing. I love to listen to her babble and coo. I swear she would repeat the word "hi" when I would say it to her. Me: "ooooh... hi", Lydia: "ohhiii. She is amazing.

Here are some more pictures I want to remember:

Lydia is such a happy, sweet baby! We love her so much and can't believe how big she has gotten in just two months!

Five Things

This week has been exhausting and exciting all at the same time. This combination made for a significant lack of pictures, expounded by the fact that the camera is in Lydia's room and she is miraculously taking a nap in her bed. (And there is no way that I am going to chance waking her up by sneaking in there.) If you are disappointed in this weeks Five Things - then just head back to last weeks blog post. I posted late and it was immediately followed by Lydia's blessing posts, so chances are you didn't read it. It's got some good things, like Lydia's first adventure in a swimming suit and our first sans-baby date night, so check it out. LINK HERE.

This weeks top five:

#1- We signed a contract for our house! It was such an exciting thing. We have made several offers on lots of different houses (and even started a contract on the same house, but in Herriman instead of Lehi) but it's never really felt right. I've always been nervous or even indifferent. I kind of expected to feel some of those same feelings, but the whole time it just was so exciting! We are going to go to our introduction to the Design Center tomorrow and get started picking things out. It's such a crazy feeling. I've been really happy in our little apartment, but i'm starting to get antsy to be in a house. Especially that house. It's perfect for us.
Picture from HERE - where you can see lots of pictures of the model home that we will be building.

#2- I was hanging out with one of my friends this week, and randomly discovered that Lydia loves this song from Sesame Street. Sarah's little boy Kason was watching it while we were crafting up some fun "Thank You" cards - and Lydia was sitting in my lap. As soon as it came on, she stopped fussing and watched through the whole thing. As soon as it was over, she would start fussing again. But, push the replay button and she was a happy camper for the whole minute and fifty-two seconds. None of the other songs do it for her. All I can say is: "Thank You Will.i.am - your song is now up on every internet connected device in our home for those times that I need a minute-and-fify-two-second break."

#3- The Olympics! We have been cheering on the good ole' US of A all week. I have been loving it. On Monday, we went to an Olympic-themed birthday party for our friend, Jason. We played "beach volleyball" on the grass, joked about running obstacle course relays (no one actually attempted any of the suggested stunts), and ate delicious 'round the world cuisine. Some of the featured treats were: Fish and Chips from England (sweedish fish and potato chips), Stars and Stripes from America (watermelon cut in the shape of stars and blueberries), and some yummy bean dip from Mexico (I can't remember the clever name attached to this treat). We had a great time and were even awarded gold medals at the end!

It is so fun to watch the Olympics together at night and to have them on during the day. We have been keeping track of America's medals on our awesome while board in our living room. As of last night the count was: 18-Gold 9-Silver and 10-Bronze.

#4- David has had an incredibly busy work-week this week. He was basically double scheduled and ended up being on four different jobs (working with four different clients) instead of just two (which doesn't sound like a lot, but two clients fill 40 hours up to the brim). When I asked what happened when the two managers realized that they had both put him down to work on their jobs, I thought he would tell me that they duked it out and the person who won rock paper scissors would get to keep David. (They all like him on their jobs because he is super-awesome.) However, he told me that they both "really need him" and that he was going to do it all. Yikes! He has been going in early, working late, and then coming home and working some more. I think three nights this week he has come home, eaten dinner, and then worked until about eleven. I was just informed that tonight will be the same routine and that tomorrow after our Design Center meeting - he will have to put in about eight hours. Super bummer! I tell you this, not to make you pity me... but to make you understand that I have been spending a LOT of time alone with Lydia. And that is why most of these Top-Five are about her.  Including this one.

Lydia has started getting more control over her hands, but just yesterday she started making the funniest little motion. She balls up her hands and it looked like she is getting ready to box someone. I couldn't get any great pictures of it - but here are a couple that I snapped. Seriously, it is so funny! She pulls in her bottom lip and puts up her hands and I can't help but giggle. Here is my little prize fighter.

#5- As many of you know, Lydia will not sleep in her bed. After weeks of sleeping in a chair holding her, and sleeping on a blanket on the floor David and I finally bought a little mini co-sleeper to put in our bed. (It's essentially an infant bed that sits about five inches high so that they can sleep in your bed without worrying about them getting hurt.) But now it's been almost three months and she is getting to big to fit in her co-sleeper. We have loved these last three months, but it's about time to start transitioning her back into her bed. (And by "back into her bed" I mean, "into her bed for the first time because she has never liked it.")

There is a huge battle out there regarding how you should handle babies and sleeping. Co-sleeping vs. cry-it-out vs. demand feeding/sleeping vs. all the other theories out there. It's rather a lot to take in. I have been reading the book "Babywise" - and although I don't know that I agree with everything in the book... we are giving it a try. I really hate letting her cry in her bed. I really really hate it. But we've got to do something, because I am not one of those co-sleeping mamas who planning to let their baby sleep with them until they are three years old. Nope. Not going to do it. So, even though we are happy with where we are right now - I think that it's a good time to make the transition. She is big enough now that I don't worry so much about her sleeping alone and crying a little. (Before she was just... too little.)

We are making some huge progress. Even though she cries when I put her down, she has slept more in her bed in the last three days than she has for pretty much her entire life combined. I'm not completely sold on the "Babywise" method - but the "No-cry Sleep Solution" book has already been checked out of the library. I have it on hold, but I figure that we will give this a go for a couple of weeks and see how it works out for us. Do any of you have any favorite baby sleep books to recommend? I would love to check them out.
Sleeping with her hands above her head, with my shirt by her head. (This way she can still feel and smell "me".)

I had to add this picture in. I made the "Lydia" out of cardboard - and I am planning to spray paint it. Turns out, spray painting with a baby who wants to be held even while sleeping isn't super easy. I will get to it though. It's on my list.

Happy Friday!
