Stats: We just switched into summer clothes and you're in mostly 2T things. Although I have a few 3T things - they are basically interchangeable between Caleb and Austin. They end up in both drawers quite often with no noticeable difference between the two. Eight teeth in front (4 on top/bottom) and one molar in the back of each side top/bottom for a total of 12 teeth. When he grins you can see his back molars and sometimes it looks like he has marshmallows stuck in his teeth which makes me smile.
A few things to remember about this age:
-Doesn't eat breakfast as much as he used to. Still doesn't eat much meat - in fact almost none.- He says the sweetest "Snuggle you" or "Snuggle Me" when he wants to cuddle in bed or on the couch. He's very affectionate and loves to hug and kiss and snuggle.
-I started crying the other day and he came to hug me. He was very worried "Wa happen Mama? Okay???" Oh, such a sweet boy.
-One of his favorite books is Red Hat Green Hat. He makes me laugh because he always tries to grab a particular hat on one of the pages as he say "mine hat!", then on another page with two animals wearing coats, he always points to one then the other saying "Jason coat - Mine coat." I don't know why, but it's solidly that way in his head.
-When you ask him a question he has a long pause/hesitation then a very fast response. "Mmmmmm... Yes." "Mmmmm... greencup." etc...
-He's saying 4-5 word sentences! Sometimes he'll say something and I'll get so distracted as I count on my fingers how many words was in the sentence. This is the best stage where language starts to really take off and transforms from just a couple of words to full thoughts strung together! I asked him what he loves about Austin and he said "Austin pway shapes wit me" - I was blown away by his comprehension and response.
-He often says "I'm" instead of I, which is darling. "I'm did that" or "I'm want that". He also says I'm in the right spot, but with the wrong corresponding verb. "I'm do that." or "I'm go in my bed." (instead of doing and going).
-I frequently ask questions like "What do you think?" or "How was your nap?" and his response is the cutest "Good!" - even when it wasn't particularly good. I love that he responds with that.
-Has really started liking to play with our magnet shapes. I love watching his brain work while he is building.
-He loves his Aunt Jenna. Through the month of March, we basically spent as much time as we possibly could with Jenna and her family because of their big move at the beginning of April. (Iowa, boo.) He loves them all, but has a special relationship with Jenna. When she's around, he will request that she do the things that I usually do, like get him out of his bed, fill his water, change his diaper. Ha. His never-ending request is "Jenna do it!" and he frequently will refuse me even if I try.
-He likes to Marco Polo people (video message) and is very affectionate even through the phone, often giving them kisses through the screen. He loves to watch their responses over and over.
- He's started sleeping with my blanket at nighttime. My favorite, special, yellow minky blanket. But he says that he's scared, and covering him up in my big blanket seems to be the only thing that helps - so it's hard to say no to. However, it's starting to warm up at night and it's too hot for him to sleep with the blanket, so after he falls asleep I have to go in and pull it off of him.
-Bedtime/nap routine: 3 books, one song, and into bed. Sometimes a rendition of the itsy bitsy spider for good measure once he's laying down.
-He loves being outside, especially in the front yard, which he calls the "front backyard". He is starting to figure out the balance bike that he got for his birthday, but it's a problem because he won't come back when I ask him to. He wants to go all the way to the end of the block, and then around the corner. Ugh.
-He's so very curious. SO curious. He gets into all sorts of mischief, although I don't feel like I can even classify it as mischief because it's not malicious and he's not trying to cause trouble or get into things - he's just... curious! He dumped half a bottle of dish soap into the sink and made bubbles as tall as he is. He dumped out a box of cheerios because he wanted to get himself a bowl of cereal. He dumps water on the floor, puts all the dirty laundry into the drier with the clean laundry, and pulled out all 400 plastic bags in the pantry. He doesn't pull things out and make messes for no reason. There's always something that he's trying to help with or figure out. I don't get upset but I have definitely gotten exasperated. As my energy has been slowing (hello pregnancy third trimester) I've had a harder and harder time keeping up with him. One day I asked my mom, "Is it inappropriate to leave your two year old strapped into his high chair all day? Asking for a friend." She thought it was funny, but I was being mostly serious.
-He colors really well. His favorite thing to draw right now are circles, over and over again.
-He has started to like to listen to music at night. He puts the CD in the cd player and pushes play and loves it. He couldn't find a CD that he wanted last night, but kept asking for "farmer had a dog", which of course is BINGO, and is the first song on a particular cd. He waited patiently while I searched through all the rooms to find the missing disk. It made me laugh that he so particularly wanted that one even though he usually cycles through them during the day.
-Does great at babysitter's houses. This year I've had to leave him for several hours every Wednesday while I take Austin to his speech therapy class, which sometimes I feel bad about - but he's done really well. I'm so glad that he does so well when I have to drop him off, either for that, or for me to go to the temple during the day, or for a date night on the weekend. He's friendly and comfortable and I'm just grateful.
-He loves his rain boots.
-One of my favorite things that he says when he's offended or gets upset is a very drawn out and offended version of Hey! It sounds like "Heee-ayyyy!" It makes me smile.
-He loves fruit and if I serve fruit with our meal, that's all he will eat. I have to serve the main dish first and then bring out the fruit after everyone has eaten an acceptable amount of other food.
-He loves candy and pockets. In fact, he believes that the only reason pockets exist are as a holding place for candy. He gets so happy when he realizes that his shorts or shirt have pockets "Look Mama, Pocket!" and immediately follows the observation up with a request as he holds his pocket open. "Nandy? Nandy - pocket??" The other day I asked him if that's the only reason to have a pocket and although I can't remember his exact words his response was clearly "of course mom, what else would a pocket be for?".
-He loves matching with Austin and they do the funniest chest bump together when I dress them alike. The stick out their tummies and bump them up against each other and they both say "Matching!"
-He really likes the water and swimming, and asks all the time to wear his "swimmi-soup" and to go swimming.
-We've been going on lots of adventures and he's been awesome. As soon as spring warmed up enough, we started going on a hike every week and he's been awesome at keeping up and enjoying being outside. He especially loves throwing rocks into any kind of water we are by.
And now some pictures of our adventures:
Caleb Samuel, we love you so much. In just a few short days you are going to be a big brother for the first time! You love babies and even though you're still learning to be soft - I just know you're going to be such a great big brother. The first time you said "Baby Lucy" it pretty much sealed the deal on her name for me. You hug me all the time and ask about her. You say "Kiss Baby U-cy?" and then lean forward and give my belly the biggest kiss. It's the sweetest thing. I'm so grateful for you and the part you play in our family. You are special to me and you always will be. I love you darling boy.
