We were so excited for our 2nd Annual Science Fair! We had a great group of kids and they all did a great job with their experiments and presentations. We didn't do a science fair kickoff this year but even just having an opportunity for these these kids to meet together and support each other and stretch themselves was so valuable to us.
Lydia: Floating Fruit (testing the density of fruit vs the density of different liquids)
Austin: The Fire Snake (testing the result of using different lighting fluid to make a carbon snake)
I asked my dear friend Ali Middleton and my amazing Dad to come judge for us. They both gave great feedback to the kids and my dad even spoke to the group about how when he was little he wanted to be a scientist and when he was 12 he got a science kit with a scientist coat and even though he didn't know exactly what being a scientist meant he knew he was fascinated with the way the world worked. "And lo and behold, I became a scientist. My career was in wildlife management. I studied wildlife and I studied plants. I just wanted to say how impressed I am will all of these projects. I'm impressed with your thought processes and how you came up with your projects. I'm impressed with the scope of your projects. We learned about electricity. We learned about acids and bases and plants and density! I just want to encourage you... NEVER stop thinking about the world." He went on to encourage the kids to hold on to their wonder and to encourage them in their efforts as lifelong students of the world around them.
This science fair involved setting up their display posters and presenting about their science projects. They did a great job preparing and presenting and employed good friendship and social skills when they congratulated the other students who won awards in the science fair and encouragement to all who participated.
Winners were:
1st: Jason Haderlie (Growing Gummy Bears)
2nd: Iris Young (Chapstick Science)
2nd: (tie) Austin Peaden (The Fire Snake)
3rd: Ernest Paxton (Making Electricity with Fruit)
Austin was so thrilled to take 2nd Place this year, especially because Lydia had taken second place last year. They both worked hard and I am proud of them.

I also had Lydia and Austin submit their projects to the Wasatch Home Educators Network (WHEN) Science Fair and when the winners were announced Lydia was awarded Third Place in the Grand Price Awards and Austin received the Best in Class award!
